Jeremy was born with a physical deformity, a severe learning disability, and a terminal illness. While he fell further behind his peers each year, his parents tried to give him a normal life. This included sending him to St. Theresa’s Elementary School. By age 12, he still had only progressed to second grade however. As a Christian school, the teachers at St. Theresa’s Elementary School were nevertheless kind to Jeremy. Mrs. Miller, the second grade teacher, was particularly caring. Whenever she could spare the time from the other 19 children in her class, she attempted to help Jeremy at least get something out of the day’s lesson. As Spring arrived one year, Jeremy seemed more distracted than usual, however. His health was becoming increasingly more of a problem. And he seemed to be getting less and less from each day’s class. Two days before Easter vacation, Mrs. Miller handed each of the children a plastic egg.
