The book of Ezekiel opens with God giving the prophet a vision. The vision is full of baffling and complex images, including things like lightning, fire, and smoke, and wheels and creatures with wings. Biblical commentaries say that the message is actually quite simple however. They says the overall message is that God is holy. And because God is holy, they say God told Ezekiel He had decided to move against the people of Israel in judgement because of how unholy they had become. But because God is love, He was willing to give them one more chance. So He sent Ezekiel to say “this is what the Sovereign Lord says,” and to call the people to repentance.
